Beer bottle caps fit perfectly around the base of office WotC medium-size minis. Get lots of different colors for different conditions and marks.

For swarms/minions, I make tokens out of Sculpey and write letters and numbers on them once they’re done. You just roll the clay in to a ball then press down with your thumb to make the tabs.
The realism factor takes a bit of a hit without licensed minis, but they are light, durable and really helpful when you’ve got say a dozen ghouls to represent and don’t want to confuse players with mismatched minis.

Take a gridded piece of paper and laminate it, you can now draw on it with erasable markers to show area effects, terrain and whatever else you like.

Stacking beading/crafting storage boxes make excellent storage solutions for medium size minis

I would go for the chessboard minis. They can represent almost anything. Of course for larger monsters you should use bigger items.
I have the following reasons for not liking the WotC minis
1. People tend to play with the mini’s distracting them from the game. (Maybe it is also my bad DM skills)
2. Mini’s cost quite some money. I would rather want to spend this on D&D books.
3. Mini’s look good but not perfect. “my character has no mace”. The best way to stop people from talking about those minor flaws is to show you don’t care.
