I’m still not 100% but improving, day by day, even as other medical issues arise to challenge me and keep me from ever getting back to quite where I was – well, ‘ever’ is a long time, but that’s what it feels like. I got out of the hospital on the 16th, so this week marks a month of recuperation; I have two weeks more up my sleeve on my original expectation, so the fact that this is posting shows that I have made better progress than that (but I may atill miss the occasional post as a result). Many Thanks to all those who wished me well or supported me!

Responses to “The Face Of Money” were a little disappointing – it seemed like people skimmed the anchor post and paid no attention to the alternatives offered for those not inspired by the base premise, but maybe I’m being too harsh on them. Either way, the response is what it is – those who submitted seemed to enjoy delving deeper into the world’s canon, and that’s all you can realistically ask for. Anything more is a bonus!

Another thing that I didn’t get to do was another followup post, this time dealing with the subjects of counterfeighting and forgery, because that’s a natural way to bring all this world-building (in small doses, easily assimilated) to the attention of the PCs. If they go to spend loot / reward / payment and discover the money isn’t real, they will start scrutinizing every bill or coin – for a while – and every time they discover another fake, their interest will be renewed. Use this to your advantage!

Campaign Mastery

Because it was part of the anchor text, Campaign Mastery led the way, describing the banknotes and coins of the fictional 205x British Empire. I think that this will be the last time I ever amalgamate a post on the subject with the anchor text – my philosophy has always been to give readers not taking part something of quality with which to engage, but the (potential) downside is the problem described above. So I think I’ll separate the two next time and see how that works out. But I did take the chance to build the canon a little more solidly and then present that to any players who may have been interested. That said, I think most of the transactions would be electronic in nature by this point, but the followup post that I had in mind to address that never got written, much less posted.

Link to my submission: The Face Of Money: Blog Carnival Sept 2026

Dungeons & Possums

I was gratified by the excitement that my post generated on this site, and their d66 table (two d6’s, one for the tens place) didn’t disappoint, bringing little slices of the world’s history and complexity to light. This world is clearly one in which paper money has yet to be invented, so everything is coinage. I deeply appreciated the consistency of the illustrations. For most D&D GMs, this provides everything you need as a template; slim it down a bit (eschewing some of that world-building) and you have a disposable coinage that still conveys the vibe of history while still being a common factor to unite the game world about something. Or don’t simplify it, just rearrange it a bit, and you can give Elves, Dwarves, etc, their own currency and make it say something about them. The choice is yours, but this marks a great starting point.

Link to his submission: September RPG Blog Carnival: The Face of Money

Sea Of Stars

Sean H was the next cab off the rank with this submission, which – appropriately – looked at the coinage for the Sea Of Stars (which is either a game in its own right or a campaign setting, or both in a neat bundle). The title alone is intriguing since it’s both evocative and could fit either a Sci-Fi setting or a Fantasy one – there aren’t all that many titles that could put an equally-strong foot into either camp. That details my mindset when I sat down to read this submission – I wasn’t 100% sure of the context, which I intended to understand more fully from the content. it only took until the second paragraph to erase any confusion, thanks to the words “…my primary fantasy game” – so the rest was able to be appreciated for what it was with no real overhead.

What’s perhaps the most interesting thing about this post is that Sean doesn’t spend much time on the coinage itself, spending most of the submission looking at how it connects to the rest of the game world and the circumstances within. As such, it’s more complimentary to the Dungeons & Possums article and less in competition with it. That’s the great power of the Blog Carnival – it looks at themes from all sorts of different angles.

Link to his submission: Coins And Currency Of The Sea Of-Stars

Vulcan Stev

Steve was the last to contribute to the blog carnival this time around. His post is different from all the others in that he looks at Post-apocalyptic currency in Toril, an alternative 1974. In fact, if I had completed the modernist take on ‘credit/plastic/digital’ for Campaign Mastery, this would have completed the basic spectrum of possibilities. Like Sean H previously, Steve looks more into the backstory than the units of currency itself, raising some key questions (given the game world) about the very core concepts in back of its existence. Perhaps the greatest point of interest here (since I don’t run either Toril or Car Wars) is how diversity of micro-settings can coexist with the bigger picture of a common currency. There are questions and answers embedded here that can be useful to every GM looking to ground his currency in their settings.

Vulcan Stev is also hosting the Blog Carnival that took over from mine, on the subject of “Magic Items, the Weirdest and Best” – you can find it here.

Link to his submission: Post Apocalyptic Currency

The Final Roundup

Despite the relative sparsity contributions, it’s great to see the diversity of the submissions. Put together, they are a comprehensive array of inspirational sources on the subject – and if you want to dig even deeper, there are some of the questions that weren’t really tackled that I listed in the anchor post. It’s a great beginning to a ubiquitous part of the game-world landscape!

After posing the question, “What’s the backstory behind money in your campaign?” this post links and evaluates the answers.
