I see lots of help for TS coming in, but don't forget Ruan's question. I do like the way that people aren't just making suggestions, they are explaining the reasons why they think their suggestion might be a good one. Keep the solid advice coming, folks!

Cool question!

From what I've seen, online gaming is highly character-focused, and combat tends to run at a high level--you don't go thirteen rounds with a group of bugbears.

So, I'd recommend a story-oriented system like FATE, which I love but have yet to be able to play, or even building a system out of FUDGE. I think you'll want a simple system that concentrates on building interesting characters rather than simulating every aspect of combat mechanics.

For online roleplaying the best bet if you want an experience as close to what you get in real life would be to use a virtual tabletop. Some of the better VTs are expensive to use because they require a monthly subscription, however, Fantasy Grounds II requires you simply buy licence for it (the DM licence costs more then the player licence) but its a good program.
OpenRPG is another relatively good VT, and is free. Its also not system specific, so you could play anything from WoD to DnD

Simple is often best, yes, and I have proof.
Anther option is play-by-forum : One of my rules sytems was adopted last year by a swiss/french play-by-forum RPG in the world of Eragon (15000 players as of last information). The game is called "Instant Game", which should be a hint as to its simplicity :) "Three minutes to present the world. Four minutes to explain the rules. Five minutes to create the character, and off we go..."

I could get you the link to the forum and the administrator who automated the dice rolls, but since they play in French, I suspect this might be of little help... unless you speak French? In which cas I can e-mail you adress of where to download the games' system and the forum link and let you compare it to your perceived needs. (Proud subnote : This game has proven so elegant and popular I've been asked for twenty printed copies of it by Games Masters over the past four years)

http://www.rpgvirtualtabletop.com/
Not sure if this fits the bill, perhaps more of a simultaneous remote playing rather than PBEM or posting disjointly.

http://www.dungeonaday.com/
provides continuing content for a massive dungeon crawl.

http://www.obsidianportal.com/
Is a good site with upgraded account you have a fourm which is where you could play, and the wiki/adventure logs can be used to great effect keeping people up to date, and/or answering questions about the past any players might have.

Those are my recommendations...
