It's amazing how many in-game problems can be solved by asking the question "Have you tried talking to the person OOC about it?"

I have been lucky in my games in that when it comes to character alignment/personality conflicts I have had no problems with paladins. However, to make up for it, there have been PLENTY of players who did not know the difference between "chaotic" and "stupid". They did their "chaotic" action without thinking about it or consulting the party, got killed (or in some cases caused a TPK), then cried that they got punished for playing in character, and did not understand why the rest of the group was mad at them and not the DM. Mike is right though, they do eventually grow out of if, but that is provided the group takes the time to talk to them and lead them in the right direction. Otherwise they just get frustrated and leave.

While on topic, this article is probably worth a read: http://www.giantitp.com/articles/tll307KmEm4H9k6efFP.html

Thanks, Noumenon. Credit where it's due - it's always easier to answer the question that someone asks, and Johnn did a great job of that - so good that the only thing that was left for me to do was find a way to look deeper and consider the possibility that the answer wouldn't solve the problem! I'm just hopeful that between the two of us, we've helped the situation.

Mike's deconstruction of the question into its core assumptions and speculations was really good. I also enjoyed Johnn's story from work.
