It sounds like at some point you should find a way for them each to end up dealing with a goup of people they wouldn't normally hand around with, just for the variety - fighters have to consult with mages, bard goes to the military, casters have to deal with the servants. There's more to PCs than just their archetypes, so occasionally you should give them the opportunity to show it.

That was the plan, mine as well as the group's. This group tends to often split up during these big assemblies and go find whoever they most fit in with. Fighters go hang with the military types, casters go to the casters, bard goes to the jester or the group that looks like the most gossipy, etc. That way they all have a chance of overhearing some useful information, not just the high charisma social butterflies.

The best approach to making that sort of thing work, Robert, is to ensure that the things they are looking at/for are relevant to their characters. The character who spots the setup for an assassination attempt, for example, might be someone who might ordinarily make use of the shadows in the same way that the assassins are, or who is paranoid about assassins, or who has had a family member or close friend/ally assassinated in the past. The character who the noblewoman gossips with should be either a bard (ie spreader of gossip), or have a high charisma. Ans so on.

Thanks for the great advice guys!

These particular players are generally able to watch "cutscenes" without much issue, but perhaps I should give everyone something to do. A few will have their own targets to keep an eye on, one or more will see the setup for an assassination, a noblewoman will be constantly gossiping with them, etc.

My DM did a great little piece once when we got to spy on the Evil Gods conspiring and speculating about a new pretender. He wrote up the script that otherwise he would've just performed and gave us each a part and a hand-out. We could only see our lines; everyone else's were converted to wingdings or something. This way we all got to participate, and the secrets were revealed in the conversation so we all got to be surprised as well. It was way better than if he had just done it himself, and I am always searching for an excuse to put it in one of my own games.

Welcome to Campaign Mastery, yongkyosunim. Great idea about NPC profiles and players using them to participate in scenes. What game system are you running?
